Wax Museum - HMVP Salutes: Gravediggaz’s Horror Rap Masterpiece 6 Feet Deep
I'm sure me digging out my copy of the Gravediggaz 6 Feet Deep LP this past week had a lot to do with my annual rewatch of Ernest Dickerson's classic Tales From the Crypt movie Demon Knight. Both Demon Knight and its soundtrack were very a big deal to me growing up. The movie marked one of the first times my parents had let me see an R-Rated movie alone in a theater, let alone an R-Rated horror movie. The theater was in our local shopping mall here in Chattanooga, and my first move after the credits rolled was to make a beeline to another early staple for me, our mall's Camelot Music record store, to buy the movie's soundtrack.
My mission was successful. I found a copy of the movie's soundtrack on cassette. Though at the time, I was already well acquainted with the music of Filter due to being a teenaged Nine Inch Nails super fan, there were very few bands contained therein that I was familiar with at the time. I spent the summer that year getting acquainted with all of them and quickly became a devoted fan of the heavy sound of featured artists like Sepultura, Pantera, and the Melvins. Though I'd come to love each of these bands and listened to their contributions to the soundtrack repeatedly, the most worn-out section on my oft-listened to tape was the soundtrack's only hip-hop offering the Gravediggaz bonafide classic 1-800 Suicide. Before I knew it, I had the songs lyrics stamped into my soul forever (as well as it's frankly PERFECT beat), and I still surprise myself by remembering them all these years later if I ever put the record on.
As if the cosmos was rewarding me for digging 6 Feet Deep out and putting it back in heavy rotation, the good folks at Holy Mountain out of the blue announced a full-on Gravediggas collection. https://holymountainprinting.com/collections/gravediggaz A clear sign that the universe is ready to finally rediscover the dark delights this record holds and perhaps finally give them their due. Here's a couple of choice selections from the record A perfect LP to drop into your own rotation this Halloween season.
